School Events Guide

Parents are invited into school in Term 1, 3 and 5 to see our school in action during a normal morning.  To ensure all parents hear the safeguarding briefing, we ask that everyone is signed in by 09:00am and gathers in the Old Hall.  The Headteacher will introduce Open Classrooms, giving guidelines about moving around the school.  

We encourage parents to visit all classrooms to experience teaching and learning in all seven year groups at Sussex Road.  Although it may be tempting to spend time with your own child, we encourage parents to keep moving so learning is not disrupted.

We ask all parents to sign out by 10:00am so Playtime can happen safely, as normal.  All visitors must ensure they do not use mobile phones whilst on site.

Held in Terms 2 and 4, parents are strongly encouraged to attend an appointment with your child's Class Teacher to discuss their progress.  Bookings can be made through the Arbor App, usually two weeks beforehand.  Parents unable to access the app are welcome to make their appointment via the School Office.

Parent Consultation Evenings are on Tuesdays (4:00pm-6:30pm) and Wednesdays (5:30pm-8:00pm).  Dates are in the school calendar from September, giving parents lots of notice to arrange childcare or work commitments.  

Parents are asked to arrive 10 minutes before their appointment to collect their child's Consultation Record from a member of the Senior Leadership Team, in the main entrance hall.  Parents should then make their way to their child's classroom and knock on the door at their appointment time.

Face to face meetings are important to us.  Children really value knowing their parents have been in their classroom and are familiar with their learning environment.  This also provides the opportunity for parents to look through their child's books.  We aim to make these meetings as personal as possible; virtual meetings have real limitations.

Children are welcome to attend but must be supervised by parents at all times.

Usually on the first Wednesday back in September, all parents are invited to come into school to hear the Headteacher Presentation, followed by Meet the Teacher.

The Headteacher Presentation reflects on the previous school year, updates parents of works that have taken place over the Summer and sets out the key priorities for the year ahead.  Parents should gather in the Old Hall for a 5:00pm start.

At 5:30pm teachers will present the curriculum for the year ahead in Year Group teams.  This will then be repeated at 6:00pm to accommodate parents with more than one child in the school.  Parents are encouraged to ask any questions they may have.

We now live in a world which increasingly relies on the Internet.  Our children are growing up with a wide range of technology and endless communication channels online.  Whilst our curriculum covers as much as possible to keep our children safe online, we encourage all parents to attend the Online Safety Presentation, provided by SWGfL.  The presentation will usually take place in an evening during Term 1, biannually.

Towards the end of each term, parents will be invited to come into school to view and celebrate the learning that has been taken place during the Enquiry.  This usually happens just before the end of the school day on the penultimate day of term. 

We all love to take part on the Save the Children's national Christmas Day event.  Staff and children are invited to wear a festive jumper, in place of their school jumper, in return for a donation to charity.  Donations will be collected by our House Captains on the school gates, in the morning.  All other uniform should be worn as normal.  

At Sussex Road, our lunchtimes are structured around the OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning approach.  Both playgrounds are set up with a wide range of different play zones, such as, Small World, Dressing Up, Den Building, STEM and Music.  We also have an indoor play option for all children everyday.  For parents to find out more about this successful provision, we invite them in to experience an OPAL session.  Dress for all weather as it is VERY rare for our Sussex Roders to not go outside at lunchtime.
