Our Curriculum
Our curriculum is rooted in curiosity, inspiring children to ask questions, challenge ideas and explore through enquiry-led learning. We create an environment where independent thinking and active participation flourish, helping learners build confidence to investigate, reflect, and adapt.
With a rigorous, knowledge-rich approach, we nurture a love of learning alongside a strong commitment to wellbeing, inclusion, and the great outdoors. Children are empowered to take ownership of their learning, make meaningful connections across subjects, and develop the skills needed to thrive in an ever-changing world.
Inclusive and grounded in real-life contexts, our curriculum ensures learning is purposeful and meaningful. It equips children with the knowledge, values, and attitudes to succeed academically, grow personally, and contribute safely and positively to society.
We use metacognitive strategies to encourage learners to plan, monitor and evaluate their learning in order to reflect on both their successes and areas for improvement.
At Sussex Road Primary School, we have developed a bespoke curriculum underpinned by the National Curriculum, current research, and our local context. It focuses on both disciplinary and substantive knowledge, encouraging children to embrace and apply these skills with confidence.
We believe that a rigorous academic curriculum, combined with a broad range of enriching life experiences, is essential for all children to be successful. Through our curriculum, we provide children with valuable and inspirational opportunities that expand their understanding of the world beyond the classroom. This approach allows all of our children to access their learning having experienced the same opportunities.
Our pedagogy is guided by respected research, particularly the Education Endowment Foundation’s 5 a Day Model, and is underpinned by our Inclusive Teaching Pedagogy with six themes:
- Behaviour and Relationships
- Explicit Instruction
- Cognitive and Metacognitive Strategies
- Scaffolding
- Flexible Grouping
- Use of Technology
We continually refine our practice through collaboration with subject specialists and partners such as Kent Music Hub, Kent Cricket, Kent Maths Hub, the Schools Sports Partnership, and local secondary schools.
Our curriculum develops curious, confident learners who question, reflect, and adapt. Through enquiry-led, knowledge-rich teaching and metacognitive strategies, pupils take ownership of their learning and build resilience. With a strong focus on wellbeing, inclusion, and real-life contexts, children thrive academically, socially, and personally, leaving school equipped to succeed and contribute positively to society.
Our curriculum empowers pupils to achieve outstanding outcomes. By the end of Year 6, their attainment is consistently well above both local and national averages.
