Art and Design

INTENT

We aim to deliver a high-quality art and design curriculum to engage, inspire and challenge children to express themselves creatively. Children will be equipped with the skills to experiment, create and evaluate their own, and others, works of art.

We place emphasis on the process rather than the outcome, providing opportunities to explore a range of skills and techniques using high-quality resources.  Children will use their metacognitive strategies to make their own choices, to experiment and to develop confidence in themselves as artists. We ensure children understand the importance of art and how the process and opportunity for self-expression can support a positive state of wellbeing.

Our art curriculum offers children opportunities to appreciate great art and great artists, designers, craftspeople, both past and present, from a variety of cultures. Children are challenged to explore ideas through art considering what art is and the impact of how art has shaped and reflects our history.

IMPLEMENTATION

We have analysed the national curriculum programme of study for Art and Design and broken down the content into disciplinary, substantive and practical knowledge.  Children will learn how to draw, paint, sculpt, print and photograph using a range of media.  Children will use a sketchbook to record their journey through art.

Teachers create a safe and nurturing environment where children are encouraged to take creative risks and to learn from the journey, rather than head towards a predefined end result. Children will experiment with a wide range of resources in our purpose-built art studio. Children are encouraged to behave as artists and experience what it is to be an artist.

IMPACT

Our curriculum will engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art. Children will be proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture, print and photography. Children will to appreciate great art and great artists, designers, and craftspeople, both past and present from a variety of cultures and will understand that people will have different opinions and views on different pieces of artwork and different artists. Children will use their metacognitive skills to plan, monitor and evaluate throughout the artistic process and will be able to give constructive feedback on each other’s artwork which is respectful of others’ feelings and viewpoints.
